Ripple Takes On SWIFT in Cross-Border Payments Showdown
Ripple, the payment network, has been gaining attention as a potential challenger to SWIFT, which has dominated cross-border payments for over 50 years. Ripple's infrastructure includes its own compliance-focused stablecoin, RLUSD, and the XRP Ledger, which has processed over $1.7 trillion in value transferred since 2012.
SWIFT, on the other hand, is a messaging cooperative that connects over 11,500 institutions across more than 220 countries. Its messages follow the ISO 20022 standard, and it continues to release yearly updates to these standards. The next major update, Standards Release 2026, goes live on November 14, 2026.
Ripple's settlement times are built around the XRP Ledger's 3-5 second finality, with fees running to fractions of a cent per transaction. SWIFT has made real speed gains in recent years, with 75% of payments reaching the destination bank within 10 minutes and 90% settling within an hour.
Ripple's model uses XRP or stablecoins like RLUSD as a bridge between currencies, which can reduce the need for banks to pre-fund accounts in every currency corridor they operate in. SWIFT, on the other hand, relies on correspondent banking relationships.
