Ripple Unlocks One Billion XRP in September Escrow Release
Ripple is set to unlock one billion XRP on September 1, 2026, as part of its escrow program on the XRP Ledger. This upcoming unlock has put renewed attention on the token's supply dynamics after months of weakness.
XRP has managed to break through $1 in price, trading at $1.43 at press time. The company introduced the system in late 2017 when it placed 55 billion XRP into time-based escrow contracts.
Under the arrangement, up to one billion XRP is released at the beginning of each month, but Ripple historically returns between 600 million and 800 million XRP to new escrow contracts immediately after the unlock. This means only about 200-400 million XRP actually enter circulation, with a net monthly addition worth approximately $286 million to $572 million.
