Ripple Unveils Four-Stage Plan to Quantum-Proof XRP Ledger
Ripple is taking proactive steps to prepare its XRP Ledger (XRPL) for the potential threat of quantum computers, which could break current cryptography. The company has announced a four-stage security plan through 2028, led by Ayo Akinyele, Senior Director of Engineering.
The plan's first phase involves building an emergency system that would allow users to move their accounts to quantum-safe security without exposing their private keys in case the cryptography is compromised earlier than expected. The second phase focuses on testing new quantum-resistant algorithms during the first half of 2026 on AlphaNet, with a check on whether larger signatures can work without slowing down the network or increasing transaction costs.
The third phase involves parallel deployment of quantum-safe and existing cryptography on Devnet and Testnet in the second half of 2026. This will allow developers to test the new system before making changes to the mainnet. The final stage, scheduled for 2028, aims to submit an XRPL code amendment for a network-wide move to quantum-resistant security.
Ripple's plan takes into account existing tools on the network that could facilitate a future transition to post-quantum security, such as key rotation and seed-based key generation. The company is optimizing its roadmap to balance preserving current strengths with preparing for potential contingencies.
