Ripple's $2Bn Stablecoin Milestone Sparks Settlement Rail Ambitions
Ripple's dollar-pegged stablecoin RLUSD has reached a market capitalization of $2 billion, with over $1 billion issued on the XRP Ledger. According to Ripple's senior vice president Jack McDonald, this milestone marks a significant step towards positioning RLUSD as a settlement rail for tokenized finance, payments, and lending.
The rapid growth of RLUSD has led to increased usage of the XRP Ledger network, with rising activity in recent months providing context for why issuance concentrated on the ledger has become a notable metric. McDonald emphasized that market capitalization is not the only measure of success, cautioning that it is just one checkpoint along the way.
Ripple's ambitions for RLUSD go beyond mere supply growth, aiming to establish it as a dollar-denominated settlement instrument that supports tokenized-asset trading. To achieve this, Ripple has invested in ZILO and Licuido, expanding digital financial infrastructure around the XRP Ledger. This effort aligns with a broader pattern of increased XRP Ledger infrastructure access accompanying RLUSD's rollout.
The Kenya-based project with MC Social Venture, BlockBima, and Fortune Credit aims to widen small-business access to insurance and credit by routing RLUSD into loans. Ripple claims that this initiative has cut settlement time by 97 percent and reduced costs by roughly 3,000 times, figures that could have a significant impact on RLUSD's long-term case if they hold at scale.
