Ripple's Quiet Empire Building: $4 Billion in Acquisitions Fuel Institutional Growth
Ripple, the company behind XRP, has been quietly building an empire of financial services through a series of acquisitions. Between 2023 and 2025, the company spent around $4 billion on various purchases, including Metaco for $250 million in custody technology, Standard Custody for a New York trust license, Hidden Road for $1.25 billion in prime brokerage, Rail for stablecoin payments, GTreasury for corporate treasury software, and Palisade for XRP-native custody.
The acquired pieces form a recognizable shape: safekeeping, brokerage, clearing, treasury management, and settlement, the functional anatomy of an institutional bank. The company's federal charter application has been waiting at the OCC, but Ripple has methodically built a company that can succeed whether or not its token does.
One disclosed performance number is striking: Ripple Prime, the former Hidden Road, reports revenue more than tripled since acquisition, clearing over $3 trillion annually. The machine demonstrably earns significant revenue through these acquisitions and services offered by Ripple Custody, including 250% customer growth claims and a client roster that includes HSBC and DBS.
Ripple's financing profile indicates the company wants to buy and not be bought or listed. A $500 million investment round from notable firms like Fortress, Citadel, and Pantera alongside President Monica Long's confirmation of no IPO plans supports this view.
