Ripple's XRP Escrow Unlock Hinges on CLARITY Act Passage
Ripple's upcoming XRP escrow unlock on September 1 has taken on new significance due to the potential passage of the CLARITY Act in the US Senate. The bill is scheduled for a cloture vote on September 15, and if approved, it could impact the liquidity of XRP available in institutional markets.
The CLARITY Act's passage would allegedly allow Ripple to release more XRP from escrow to address off-ledger liquidity needs in stablecoin and foreign exchange trading pairs. This is according to a registration statement filed by Cryptex Digital Market Cap ETF, which contains a 4.88% stake in XRP.
Ripple's current system of releasing 1 billion XRP per month from escrow has been the subject of scrutiny from XRP community figures. Bill Morgan questioned the source of the statement attributed to Ripple, while WrathofKahneman noted that the escrow releases are hard time-locked and cannot be increased.
However, Morgan later clarified his interpretation, stating that the release of more XRP would require sufficient demand from institutions. If the CLARITY Act is passed, it remains to be seen how Ripple will utilize the released XRP and whether it will meet the off-ledger liquidity needs in stablecoin and foreign exchange trading pairs.
