Ripple's XRP Fails to Displace SWIFT as Global Payments Leader
Ripple's XRP has been touted as a potential disruptor to the global payments system dominated by SWIFT. However, experts argue that replacing SWIFT is not feasible for Ripple, but rather carving out a niche in high-cost remittance corridors and emerging markets.
SWIFT is a messaging network with over 11,500 institutions across 200 countries, handling more than 53 million messages per day. It does not hold funds, clear transactions, or settle payments, but rather transmits payment instructions between financial institutions.
Ripple's value proposition targets the settlement and liquidity infrastructure underneath SWIFT's messages. The company's On-Demand Liquidity (ODL) handled around $15 billion in 2024, a small fraction of global cross-border flows. Ripple claims to reduce costs by 60-70% compared to traditional SWIFT corridors.
SWIFT has responded aggressively to speed criticism with its Global Payments Innovation initiative, which carries over $300-$420 billion daily across 150 currencies. The cooperative also announced the Swift Payments Scheme, creating network-wide rules for retail cross-border payments and integrating blockchain technology into its infrastructure.
