Rivals OpenAI and Anthropic Unite on AI Safety Amid Growing US Regulation Concerns
OpenAI and Anthropic, two of the leading players in the AI industry, have joined forces to push for stricter government oversight on advanced AI models. According to a report, the companies are lobbying the Trump administration to establish a clearer review process for frontier AI systems before public release.
The proposed framework would require qualifying AI models to undergo a voluntary government review at least 30 days before launch if they demonstrate significant cybersecurity or national security capabilities. This joint effort comes as policymakers prepare to define new evaluation standards for the most advanced AI systems, reflecting growing concerns over national security and global AI competition.
A major focus of the joint appeal centers on the rapid development of advanced Chinese open-weight AI models. OpenAI and Anthropic have reportedly warned that some Chinese open-source AI systems may have been developed using outputs from their own models, raising concerns about intellectual property protection, data privacy, and cybersecurity risks.
