RLUSD Challenges XRP's Bridge Asset Role
Ripple's introduction of the RLUSD stablecoin has sparked debate over XRP's future, particularly in its role as a bridge asset connecting different markets. According to Jake Claver, Chairman of Digital Ascension Group, RLUSD could potentially make XRP 'pointless'.
Claver argues that RLUSD can serve as a fast digital settlement method with a stable value linked to the US dollar, reducing the need for XRP in certain transactions. However, he notes that XRP still has a unique role due to its ability to act as a hub at an airport, allowing assets without direct liquidity to trade with each other.
RLUSD's growth has been significant, reaching a market value of $1.53 billion, but more than 88% of its supply is on Ethereum, not the XRP Ledger. This raises questions about RLUSD's dependence on XRPL and whether it can truly replace XRP as the bridge asset.
Claver emphasizes that RLUSD and XRP do not have to compete, with each serving a different purpose in the market. While RLUSD is designed for payments and settlements, XRP helps connect assets without direct trading markets.
