Robinhood CEO Defends Tokenized Stocks Amid AMC Criticism
Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev has defended his company's tokenized stock offerings against criticism from AMC CEO Adam Aron. Aron slammed Robinhood for creating tokenized AMC exposure without AMC's approval, calling it 'contemptible' and 'outrageous'. However, Tenev argued that public companies should not have control over blockchain products referencing their shares.
Tenev stated that issuers should have control over the rights and obligations of the stock they issue, but not over other companies issuing securities that reference those shares. He also proposed a basic test for issuer approval, suggesting that it should be necessary only if the token changes the underlying rights associated with the stock.
Tenev's stance is based on the idea that investors who own publicly traded shares have certain property rights. He believes that blockchain distribution should not give original companies additional veto powers. Under Robinhood's structure, each token represents a separate instrument backed 1:1 by shares held within traditional markets.
