Robinhood Chain Breach: VLAD Token Scam Nets $1.2-1.3M in Ether
Robinhood Chain's release on July 1st was marred by a security breach that compromised Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev's X account. The attackers used this access to post a fake promotion for a token called VLAD, claiming it was the official mascot token of Robinhood Chain and would be listed on their trading platform.
The post remained visible for less than 20 minutes but attracted over 175,000 views before users flagged it as suspicious. On-chain monitors estimated that wallets tied to the incident extracted around $1.2-1.3 million in Ether. The attackers spent approximately $126.81 to purchase 47.2 million VLAD tokens, giving them an unrealized value of about $159,000.
The fake promotion coincided with Robinhood Chain's announcement that it would launch V2, a token launch platform featuring an ETH-based bonding curve and integration with Uniswap V4. The incident highlights the continued focus on social media compromises as a means to promote fraudulent tokens or publish malicious contract addresses.
