Robinhood Chain Memecoin Frenzy: A Zero-Sum Game
The Robinhood Chain, launched in July 2026, is an Ethereum layer-2 built on the Arbitrum Orbit stack. It was created to enable European customers to trade American stocks around the clock.
Initially, the chain held tokenized equities worth around $12.8 million to $13 million, but a set of cat memecoins called CASHCAT briefly reached a peak valuation of around $156 million on July 8. This is not an isolated incident, as a similar pattern has repeated on every new chain for years.
The mainnet launch occurred on July 1, and in five weeks, the total value locked on the chain was between $135 million to $312 million, with daily transactions reaching over 3.6 million.
Investors are drawn to memecoins due to their unregulated nature and the ease of creation. Four structural reasons contribute to this phenomenon: regulation takes time, thin markets move sharply, brand names can be mistaken for vetting, and stock tokens may seem too unexciting for some investors.
