Robinhood Chain Outage Highlights Concerns Over Rapid Growth
Robinhood Chain, a high-growth Ethereum layer-2 network, suffered an outage on September 4 that halted block production for at least 14 minutes. The disruption occurred just two months after the network's public mainnet launch and has sparked concern about its ability to support the rapid expansion of financial products on its platform.
The outage was brief but significant, given the network's impressive growth trajectory. In a relatively short period, Robinhood Chain has generated over $23 million in cumulative fees, with around $4 million earned in just 24 hours. Token Terminal estimates that the network accounted for 78.5% of layer-2 blockchain revenue over the past 30 days.
This rapid expansion has pushed Robinhood Chain into a league normally occupied by established networks like BNB Chain and others. The chain's growth is driven in part by its Stock Tokens, which provide economic exposure to US shares and exchange-traded funds without requiring participation from the referenced companies.
The introduction of Stock Tokens has attracted controversy, with AMC Entertainment CEO Adam Aron publicly challenging Robinhood over the practice. Aron accused Robinhood of creating a token tracking his company's shares on its Ethereum layer-2 network without registering it under US securities laws. He called for Robinhood to cease trading the AMC stock token and threatened to take legal action if necessary.
Robinhood Chief Legal Officer Dan Gallagher responded by saying that the company would not stop trading the AMC token, adding that they 'know a little something about the US securities laws.'
