Robinhood Defies AMC Demands Over Stock Token Rights
Robinhood's stock token product has come under fire from AMC Entertainment CEO Adam Aron, who claims the company never authorized or endorsed the product. Aron demanded that Robinhood stop offering the token tied to AMC stock, citing concerns about investor confusion and the potential for AMC to raise capital through official securities.
However, Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev defended his company's model in a post on September 11, arguing that companies should not have veto power over lawful uses of their shares once investors already hold them. He broke down tokenized stocks into three types and stated that issuer approval is only required for the first two cases.
Tenev also pointed out that Robinhood's tokens are debt securities issued by a Jersey-based entity, not AMC shares placed on a blockchain. Token holders do not appear on AMC's shareholder register and do not receive voting rights or legal rights tied to direct stock ownership.
