Robinhood Memecoin Purchases Spark Credit Card Reward Controversy

Users of Robinhood Wallet and social trading app Fomo have been able to purchase memecoins using their credit cards, potentially earning rewards that are typically unavailable for crypto transactions.

The transactions were processed through Crossmint and did not require a separate KYC check, according to testing by The Block.

However, Chase has questioned the classification of these purchases, citing that they were incorrectly labeled as 'digital goods/media' rather than cryptocurrency transactions.

This categorization is crucial in determining how transactions are treated by issuers, including whether purchases qualify for rewards programs or incur additional fees.
