Robinhood Roars Back with Strong Q2 Earnings
Roger that. Robinhood Markets reported better-than-expected earnings for the second quarter of 2024, with adjusted profits coming in at 48 cents per share. This topped analysts' estimates of 44 cents and marked a significant increase from the previous year.
The company's transaction-based revenue jumped by 44% to $776 million, driven primarily by gains in equities, options, and event contracts, which generated $156 million in revenue. Robinhood's CFO Shiv Verma noted that the rapid expansion of prediction markets has been a major growth driver for the business.
Prediction markets have emerged as an increasingly important part of Robinhood's revenue mix, with interest surging during the 2024 U.S. presidential election. Analyst Jacob Zuller described these markets as arguably Robinhood's most important growth driver and noted that they could serve as a customer acquisition funnel.
However, cryptocurrency trading remained subdued in the quarter, with transaction-based crypto revenue falling by 38% to $100 million. This decline was attributed to weaker digital asset prices, persistent market volatility, and a shift in investor interest toward artificial intelligence-related assets.
