Robinhood Secures UK Crypto License Amid Intensifying Competition

Robinhood has finally secured the UK's coveted FCA approval to offer crypto services in the country. The US-based company made its formal debut in London's financial district this year, complete with a statue of its legendary namesake. Robinhood's entry onto the official registry marks a significant milestone for a company that has spent years hovering at the edge of the British market.

The UK's crypto registry is a relatively short list of 50 companies, including eToro and Interactive Brokers. However, despite securing the license, Robinhood faces stiff competition from established players like Revolut in the UK market.

The company's journey to this point has been arduous. In 2020, it abandoned its initial British launch, leaving a 250,000-strong waitlist in the lurch. It also attempted to acquire the crypto platform Ziglu in 2022 but ultimately collapsed. The regulatory environment has changed, with the UK regulator scaling back its proposed stablecoin mandates from 2% to 1%, easing financial constraints and relaxing positions on asset redemption windows and transparency requirements.

The new framework will introduce strict market integrity standards and tailored rules for stablecoins by 2027. This concession comes after persistent criticism from market participants, prompting David Geale, who oversees payments and digital finance at the FCA, to admit that the initial thresholds were perhaps overly punitive for the burgeoning sector.
