Robinhood Soars as Bitcoin Price Rally Brings Newfound Leverage
Robinhood's stock price jumped 13.7% on Friday, adding $11.7 billion to its market value as Bitcoin and crypto-linked equities rallied.
The surge in Bitcoin's price, which rose by about 6.4%, has historically driven up the shares of companies that facilitate cryptocurrency trading, such as Robinhood and Coinbase.
Robinhood closed at $108.13 on Friday, up from $95.10 on Thursday, while Coinbase gained 8.2% to reach $186.49.
The S&P 500 index, which tracks the performance of the US stock market, rose by just 0.43% during the same period.
Robinhood's revenue from cryptocurrency transactions fell in its second quarter, but the company's diversification into other areas has made it less dependent on Bitcoin's price movement.
The next test for Robinhood will be whether Bitcoin can maintain its gains and drive up customer activity and trading volumes, which would strengthen the company's financial prospects.
