Robinhood Teases Memecoins as Speculation Mounts Over Future Listings
Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev has hinted at the company's interest in memecoins, sparking speculation about future listings. This comes after Robinhood Chain, the Ethereum-compatible Layer 2 network launched by the company in July, gained significant traction for speculative trading. According to blockchain intelligence firm Arkham, Robinhood Chain recently generated more chain fees than Solana, Base, and Ethereum.
The news is notable, given that Tenev acknowledged in July that Robinhood was building the chain for real-world assets, but also stated that it 'works great for memes'. This statement has been interpreted as a nod to the company's past experience with memecoins. In fact, Robinhood listed Dogecoin (DOGE) on July 16, 2018, when it was still a relatively small cryptocurrency and long before the 2021 retail-driven explosion in meme-coin trading.
The platform later added Shiba Inu (SHIB) on April 12, 2022. The listing came after months of pressure from the Shiba Inu community and during a period when SHIB remained one of the biggest names in crypto. Robinhood's current U.S. crypto lineup also includes several other tokens with quirky names such as Pepe (PEPE), Bonk (BONK), and Pudgy Penguins (PENGU).
