Robinhood's Memecoin Musings Reignite Speculation
Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev has sparked speculation about the trading platform's potential expansion into memecoins. The discussion began when a user named Value revived an old post asking for the inclusion of memecoins on Robinhood. This comes at an interesting time, as Robinhood has seen significant momentum in crypto since launching its Ethereum-compatible Layer 2, Robinhood Chain, in July.
The network has quickly become a major venue for speculative trading, with Arkham reporting that it generated more chain fees than Solana, Base, and Ethereum. Tenev himself acknowledged in July that the chain was built for real-world assets but also 'works great for memes.'
Robinhood's history with memecoins is not new; the company listed Dogecoin on July 16, 2018, long before the rise of meme-coin trading. The platform later added Shiba Inu in April 2022, following months of pressure from the community.
