Robinhood's Prediction Market Surge Leaves Crypto Revenue Lagging
Ronaldinho's online brokerage, Robinhood (HOOD), has reported significant revenue growth in its second quarter, with transaction revenue from event-based contracts reaching $156 million. This is a notable increase of over $50 million from the previous quarter and marks a turning point for the company, as prediction markets have surpassed crypto trading revenue.
The $156 million generated from event-based contracts represents a substantial jump in revenue for Robinhood, demonstrating the growing popularity of prediction markets among its users. In contrast, the company's transaction revenue from crypto trading decreased to $100 million in the second quarter, down by $60 million from the same period last year.
This shift in revenue priorities is not surprising, given the ongoing bear market in the cryptocurrency space, with Bitcoin down nearly 26% this year. Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev remains optimistic about the long-term prospects of crypto, stating that he believes it is in a growth cycle.
