Roman Storm's Retrial Delayed to April 2027 Amidst Pending Motion for Acquittal
Roman Storm, co-founder of Ethereum-based privacy mixer Tornado Cash, will have to wait until at least April 2027 for his retrial. US District Judge Katherine Polk Failla ordered the postponement on August 25, 2026, citing Storm's still-pending motion for acquittal. This motion has been pending without a ruling for nearly a year.
The retrial was originally scheduled to begin in October 2026 but will now start on April 26, 2027. The original trial in the summer of 2025 resulted in Storm being convicted of one count: conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money transmitting business, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison.
The other two counts, related to money laundering conspiracy and sanctions violations, each carry potential sentences of up to 20 years. The jury deadlocked on these charges, unable to reach a unanimous verdict. Prosecutors decided to retry Storm on these unresolved counts.
