Romance Scammers Now Preying on Cryptocurrency Investors
The Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office in Florida has issued a warning about a new cryptocurrency scam that targets individuals through romantic relationships.
According to the OCSO, scammers spend days, weeks, or even months building what appears to be genuine relationships with people before introducing them to a 'can't miss' cryptocurrency investment opportunity.
Victims may be encouraged to download an app or use a trading platform, only to realize later that they have lost thousands of dollars due to additional fees or taxes being requested.
The OCSO warns that this tactic can leave people vulnerable and emphasizes the importance of recognizing when something feels off in a relationship. 'Real relationships don't come with investment advice or pressure to send cryptocurrency,' the office said in a Facebook post.
