Router Protocol Shuts Down Amid Financial Challenges
Crypto infrastructure project Router Protocol has announced it will shut down its operations by September 30th after failing to commercialize its products or find an acquirer. The team cited challenges such as capital shifting from crypto into AI and lower fees for moving assets between blockchains, resulting in decreased demand for their services.
The shutdown plan includes the permanent burning of 303 million ROUTE tokens held in Router's treasury, approximately 30% of the token's nearly 1 billion total supply. The team also plans to work with centralized exchanges to end support for the token, although each exchange will have its own delisting schedule and withdrawal procedure.
In a statement on X, Router attributed its failure to sustain operations to 'bridging economics [being] thin, compressing fees against costs that never sleep.' The team has decided to open-source select components of what it built, allowing others to build upon its engineering from the past four years.
