Russia Broadens Crypto Mining Ban to Include Moscow and Surrounding Region
Russia has expanded its regional restrictions on cryptocurrency mining to include Moscow and the surrounding region. The ban, which was signed into effect by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin on July 25, prohibits digital currency mining and participation in mining pools across Moscow and the entire Moscow Region until December 31, 2032.
The decree also applies to parts of Kursk Region, specifically nine designated territories, including the city of Lgov. This expansion is aimed at mitigating grid risks due to high energy demand from mining facilities, which currently consume around one gigawatt within the Moscow power system.
Moscow Region energy authorities had requested a ban on cryptocurrency mining in advance of the government's adoption of this measure. The restriction will remain in place until 2032 unless amended by the government, and miners operating in the affected areas must cease their activities by August 15 or relocate their equipment.
