Russia Cracks Down on Cryptocurrency Mining in Moscow Amid Electricity Concerns

Russia has taken its next step in regulating cryptocurrency mining within its borders. The country's government has announced that it will ban mining operations in Moscow, as well as parts of the Kursk region, citing concerns over electricity supply and grid protection. According to a recent resolution, the restriction will take effect on August 15th, 2026, and remain in place until December 31st, 2032. The decision is aimed at preserving electricity supplies for other consumers, particularly in the densely populated Moscow area where new generation capacity is already considered necessary. The ban also covers participation in mining pools from the affected territories, preventing operators from avoiding the restriction by connecting machines to infrastructure located elsewhere.

This measure follows earlier restrictions introduced in regions such as Buryatia and Zabaykalsky Krai, which were converted into year-round bans in March 2026. The government has presented these regional measures as a way to preserve electricity supplies for other consumers, with previous restrictions reported to have reduced power consumption by over 300 megawatts.

While the decision may impact some operators still active in Moscow and the affected Kursk districts, it is unlikely to produce a material disruption to Bitcoin's global computing power. The restriction primarily affects local electricity allocation, reserving capacity for other consumers rather than new or existing cryptocurrency mining operations.
