Russia Deploys Digital Ruble Amid Cryptocurrency Ban
Russia is set to roll out its digital Ruble on September 1st, marking a significant step in promoting state-supported currency and limiting cryptocurrency adoption. Telecom giants MTS, Rostelecom, and MegaFon have confirmed they will accept the digital Ruble, with MTS allowing customers to choose the option through its app.
The digital Ruble is part of Russia's strategy to maintain control over monetary sovereignty, as it allows for fees-free transactions through existing banking apps. However, individuals still cannot spend cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin directly, and Moscow has shown no sign of changing this rule.
Marketplaces Wildberries and Ozon will also begin accepting the digital Ruble on September 1st, with a legal deadline looming in 2026 requiring retailers to adopt the currency if they have revenues exceeding $1.5 million. The Central Bank Governor Elvira Nabiullina has stated that 'technologically, everything is ready' for the rollout.
