Russia eases cryptocurrency regulations: what it means for investors
September 1, 2026 marks a significant date for cryptocurrency investors in Russia. On this day, buying and selling cryptocurrencies will become easier, thanks to licensed intermediaries that allow individuals to conduct transactions with digital assets.
The new rules will bring the crypto market closer to traditional financial infrastructure. Under these regulations, both qualified and non-qualified investors can buy and sell cryptocurrencies through licensed intermediaries. Non-qualified investors have a limitation: they can only purchase the most liquid cryptocurrencies in an amount not exceeding 300,000 ₽ per year through one intermediary.
Investors will also be allowed to exchange cryptocurrency for securities and other digital instruments within Russian legislation. This integration aims to increase trust, reduce uncertainty, and decrease the gray premium associated with operating outside conventional financial controls.
