Russia Enacts Sweeping Crypto Regulation Framework Amid Sanctions Bypass Efforts
Russia has enacted its first comprehensive crypto regulation framework with the signing of the 'Digital Currency and Digital Rights Law' by President Vladimir Putin on August 4.
The new law will take effect in two stages: most provisions come into force on September 1, 2026, while full licensing and compliance are required by July 1, 2027.
Russia has banned the use of cryptocurrencies as domestic legal tender but allows their use for international trade and cross-border settlements as a way to bypass Western sanctions.
