Russia Expands Cryptocurrency Mining Ban to Moscow and Surrounding Region

The government of Russia has expanded its ban on cryptocurrency mining activities to include Moscow and other regions. According to Resolution 936, signed by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin on July 25, mining operations will be prohibited in these areas from August 15, 2026, to December 31, 2032.

The ban addresses the severe strain that cryptocurrency mining places on local power grids. In Moscow and the surrounding region, there are over 65 data centers operating at a capacity of 734 MW.

This move follows similar restrictions in other regions, including Siberia, where previous bans successfully eased grid load by more than 300 MW.
