Russia Introduces New Regulations for Cryptocurrency Transactions

Share

Russia's cryptocurrency market is undergoing significant changes as new regulations take effect on September 1, 2026. The Federal Law No. 282-FZ and its accompanying law aim to create a more transparent and controlled regime for transactions with digital assets.

According to the new rules, owning digital currency remains legal property in Russia, but transactions must become more formalized. Users will need to undergo identification more often, keep documents for transactions, consider tax consequences, and comply with banking regulations.

The law introduces a regulated infrastructure, including digital depositories, crypto exchanges from the Bank of Russia's register, brokers, trading organizers, and other market participants. The Central Bank gains a more prominent role in overseeing operations and platforms.
