Russia Launches CBDC Nationwide Amid Growing Regulatory Momentum
Russia's central bank digital currency (CBDC), known as the digital ruble, is set to launch nationwide on September 1. This marks a significant milestone in the country's adoption of digital assets, with banks and major retailers required to accept digital payments.
The digital ruble aims to modernize Russia's retail and banking ecosystem by providing instant, traceable transactions. According to recent polling, 46% of Russian citizens are already prepared to use the digital ruble. The launch also coincides with the implementation of Russia's first comprehensive law recognizing cryptocurrency as property.
The law establishes a regulatory framework for licensed crypto exchanges and places the sector under central bank supervision. This development has been seen as a major step towards further official integration of digital assets into the Russian economy.
