Russia Launches Digital Ruble Nationwide Amid Crypto Payment Ban
Russia is set to launch its digital ruble nationwide on September 1, 2026. The central bank-issued currency will be held in state-linked wallets and used voluntarily alongside cash and conventional bank money.
The digital ruble rollout comes as the Russian authorities continue to block cryptocurrencies from everyday payments within the country.
A new regulatory framework takes effect on September 1, allowing investors to trade crypto on regulated platforms and exchanges (CEXs). However, this framework also constrains decentralized finance (DeFi) and decentralized exchange (DEX) payments.
