Russia has made significant strides in regulating its cryptocurrency market with President Vladimir Putin signing a new law that allows regulated retail trading.

The law, which takes effect on September 1, 2026, creates a legal framework for crypto trading across the country and sets clear rules for crypto exchanges, brokers, custodians, clearing companies, and investors.

Retail investors can buy up to 300,000 rubles (about $3,700) worth of approved cryptocurrencies each year through licensed intermediaries, while qualified investors will have greater investment freedom with no annual limits.

The law also introduces new rules for cryptocurrency exchanges, requiring them to be transparent and increase oversight of crypto trading platforms.
