Russia Opens Up to Cryptocurrency Investing: New Rules Take Effect in 2026
Russia is set to make it easier for individuals and businesses to invest in cryptocurrency starting September 1, 2026. The new rules will allow licensed intermediaries to handle cryptocurrency transactions, making it more accessible to both qualified and non-qualified investors.
Non-qualified investors will be restricted to buying only the most liquid cryptocurrencies and up to 300,000 ₽ per year through a single intermediary. They will also be able to exchange cryptocurrency for securities and other digital instruments within Russian legislation.
Crypto exchanges will handle the purchase and sale of digital currency, while digital depositories will account for rights to such assets. Transactions can be conducted through brokers and asset managers, including on organized trading platforms.
According to Sofya Donets, Chief Economist at T-Investments, it is recommended to invest in cryptocurrency cautiously. Volatility remains a significant risk, and investors should choose the right asset, buy before a rise, and lock in profits in time. A clear strategy and discipline are essential for reducing risks.
