Russia Restricts Retail Crypto Purchases to BTC, ETH, and USDT
The Russian government has announced new regulations for the use of digital assets in Russia. The rules are set to take effect on September 1, 2026, and aim to limit the accessibility of most altcoins to the general public.
Retail investors will be restricted to purchasing only Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Tether (USDT) under the incoming rules. There is a yearly purchase limit of 300,000 rubles ($3,632) for individuals, which applies even if funds are transacted via brokers, exchanges, or other intermediaries.
To access a wider range of digital assets, individuals must undergo a formal assessment that tests their ability to understand and manage the risks associated with trading digital assets. Those who meet the requirements may qualify for advanced investor status.
