Russia Set for Isolated Market of Discounted Tainted Cryptocurrencies
Russia is poised to become an isolated market for trading tainted cryptocurrencies at discounted prices due to Western sanctions, according to Vladislav Kochetkov, chairman of Finam's management board.
Kochetkov stated that Russia may become a speculative market for 'tainted' cryptocurrencies, which have passed through restricted addresses or platforms and are therefore toxic to international counterparties. This could make the Russian market extremely exotic, featuring significant discounts to international benchmark rates, he emphasized.
The country is set to legalize cryptocurrency transactions in September, with Finam planning to join the regulated Russian crypto market as a major participant, operating both as a broker and an exchange. The legislation, Moscow's first attempt to comprehensively regulate the digital-asset sector, will enter into force on September 1, 2026.
