Russia Set to Become Discounted Hub for Tainted Cryptocurrencies
Russia is poised to become a hub for trading 'tainted' cryptocurrencies at discounted prices due to Western sanctions, according to Vladislav Kochetkov, chairman of the management board of Finam. The company plans to join the regulated Russian crypto market as a major participant and operate both as a broker and an exchange.
The country is set to legalize cryptocurrency transactions on September 1, with a new law 'On Digital Currency and Digital Rights' coming into effect. This legislation will permit traditional firms, such as banks and brokers, to enter the coin space under their current licenses and act as intermediaries.
Kochetkov believes that Russia's market will be primarily speculative, rather than focused on acquiring crypto for settlements or storage in personal non-custodial wallets. He also noted that the Russian market may feature a significant discount to international benchmark rates due to its isolated nature.
