Russia Unveils Digital Ruble on September 1 Amid Public Resistance

Share

Russia's Central Bank is set to launch its digital ruble on September 1, marking a major step towards adopting a central bank-issued cryptocurrency. The digital ruble will be accepted by several major telecommunications and e-commerce companies, including MTS, Rostelecom, MegaFon, Wildberries, and Ozon.

These companies have confirmed their participation in the pilot project, which will allow users to make payments using the digital ruble through existing banking apps. The law requires large retailers to accept digital ruble payments from September 1, 2026, with smaller businesses having until September 2028 to comply.

The Central Bank has stated that users will not pay fees when making transactions using the digital ruble, and will have a monthly top-up limit of 300,000 rubles per bank. However, public adoption is expected to be low, with surveys showing that 51% of respondents do not want to use the digital ruble and 67% reject receiving it as part of their salary.

The launch of the digital ruble comes despite the ban on using cryptocurrencies for everyday payments in Russia. The Central Bank has proposed maintaining this ban, citing concerns over monetary sovereignty.
