Russia Unveils Digital Ruble Rollout Amid Cryptocurrency Restrictions
Russia's digital ruble rollout has begun, marking a significant step in the country's central bank digital currency (CBDC) development. On September 1, 2026, the digital ruble will be launched nationwide, while crypto payments for everyday use remain prohibited.
The digital ruble is designed to complement cash and traditional bank money, not replace them. The Bank of Russia stated that using the digital ruble will remain voluntary for individuals. From September 1, major Russian banks must provide customers with access to digital ruble transactions, while merchants earning over 120 million rubles a year and meeting certain banking criteria are required to accept digital ruble payments.
Smaller businesses will be gradually integrated into the system over the next few years, with full participation expected by 2028. Notable companies such as MTS, Rostelecom, MegaFon, Wildberries, and Ozon have already announced their intention to support digital ruble payments from September 1.
Alongside the rollout of the digital ruble, Russia is also introducing a new framework for crypto trading on regulated platforms. This will allow investors to trade cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ether through licensed exchanges. However, it's essential to note that crypto payments will still be banned for everyday use in Russia.
