Russia Widens Crypto Mining Ban to Moscow Region
Russia has expanded its crypto mining ban to Moscow and parts of the Kursk Region. The new restrictions, signed by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin on July 25, will take effect on August 15, 2026, and remain in place until December 31, 2032.
The decree prohibits independent and pooled mining operations in these areas, citing concerns over pressure on electricity infrastructure. Regional estimates suggest that mining demand is around one gigawatt in Moscow's power system, which could reach 3.6 gigawatts by 2032, accounting for 17% of the maximum system load.
Miners have been given a deadline to cease local activities or relocate their equipment before August 15. The ban does not impose a nationwide prohibition, but additional restrictions are introduced in Moscow and Kursk Region areas.
