Russia's digital ruble has made significant progress since its nationwide rollout on September 1. Within ten days, users opened over 87,000 accounts and completed more than 50,000 transactions, according to Bank of Russia Governor Elvira Nabiullina.

Nabiullina stated that the rollout had proceeded with few operational problems, with several banks facing issues when customers opened accounts or carried out certain transactions. However, these issues were quickly resolved by the banks.

The central bank has not recorded widespread disruption or a large number of complaints, and activity has actually accelerated as more people test the new form of money. Nabiullina said that many users are trying the digital ruble to understand how it works.

The Bank of Russia is also working to simplify the user experience, aiming to reduce the number of steps needed to open accounts or complete transactions while maintaining strong safeguards. The central bank intends to maintain strict acceptance requirements for large institutions, with 12 major banks and retailers required to accept digital rubles since September 1.

The rollout combines expanding CBDC access with tighter acceptance rules and continued warnings about crypto-related financial risks. Russian users have shown a preference for larger crypto assets such as Bitcoin and Ethereum alongside dollar-linked stablecoins like USDT. The Bank of Russia has advised domestic financial institutions to avoid crypto-related financial instruments and services.
