Russian Hackers Target US Nuclear Scientists in Year-Long Espionage Campaign

A state-backed Russian hacking group, known as Star Blizzard, spent over a year targeting American nuclear scientists, defense contractors, and government employees. The group's tactics were refined on Ukrainian targets before being used against Western institutions involved in nuclear research.

The campaign, which began at least a year ago, was focused on gathering intelligence on Western nuclear capabilities and national security frameworks. Star Blizzard used credential-harvesting phishing attacks, primarily aimed at Zimbra mail servers, to breach the systems of its targets.

No breaches of critical nuclear infrastructure were reported during the campaign, but the threat posed by Star Blizzard highlights the growing concern about Russian cyber operators' intentions and capabilities.
