Russian Naval Officer Assassinated in Proxy Operation Gone Wrong
Russian services have been employing proxies to conduct targeted operations in Ukraine and supportive nations over the past three months, according to Clearance Jobs. One notable example is the assassination of Capt. 1st Rank Robert Shageev, a Russian naval officer who was killed by an IED hidden in a trash can in Sevastopol on August 13.
The Ukrainian Security Service claims that Margarita Reut, a 32-year-old Russian national, acted on instructions from the Ukrainian special services and received a cryptocurrency payment for the assassination. However, it is likely that Reut had never met Shageev before being provided with targeting information on where and when to plant the IED.
This incident highlights the use of proxy operations by both Russia and Ukraine in their ongoing conflict. Proxies provide plausible deniability and expand the threat radius beyond the battlefield, making it harder for defensive intelligence services to detect and prevent attacks.
