Russian Stocks Plummet as Investors Flee to Cryptocurrencies
Russian stock market plummeted by over 21% in early July 2023, with major firms like Gazprom and VTB experiencing significant losses. Shares of Norilsk Nickel dropped 24%, while Aeroflot lost 27% and MTS declined 28%. Gold miner Polyus saw its value collapse by over 53% since the start of April 2023.
This steep decline has forced Russian business owners to seek alternative investment vehicles. According to Ukraine's Foreign Intelligence Service, they are offloading toxic assets and rerouting capital into cryptocurrencies and foreign real estate. This shift mirrors deep-rooted economic challenges, including the impact of international sanctions and domestic pressures.
