Russians Flock to Crypto as Kremlin Takes Notice
The Kremlin is growing concerned as Russians increasingly turn to cryptocurrencies, defying government control over their finances. According to the Russian Central Bank's latest financial stability report, there has been a significant rise in crypto-related activity among citizens.
From Q4 2023 to Q1 2024, web traffic on major crypto sites increased by 16.4%, with Russians making 104.6 million visits to these platforms. Unique IP addresses rose by 15.1%, and 7% of all traffic on international exchanges originates from Russia.
The bank used Transparent Blockchain, a tool developed by Rosfinmonitoring, to reveal over $50.2 billion in transactions potentially linked to Russians. The report highlighted the risks of holding crypto in Russia due to growing geopolitical tensions and potential sanctions from Western countries that could block access to funds held in stablecoins like USDT and USDC.
Russians are gravitating towards higher-cap assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum, as well as USD-pegged stablecoins. The bank advised domestic financial institutions to avoid crypto-related instruments and services. With Binance's exit from the Russian market and new regulations on the horizon, the future of crypto in Russia remains uncertain.
