Russians Flock to Crypto Despite Kremlin Concerns
The Kremlin is facing an unexpected challenge as Russians increasingly turn to cryptocurrencies, despite the government's efforts to maintain control over citizens' finances.
A recent report from the Russian Central Bank revealed a significant surge in crypto-related activity among Russian citizens. From Q4 2023 to Q1 2024, web traffic on major crypto sites increased by 16.4%, with Russians making 104.6 million visits and unique IP addresses rising by 15.1%.
The bank used a tool called Transparent Blockchain developed by Rosfinmonitoring to track transactions potentially linked to Russians, which totaled over $50.2 billion. This includes trades, P2P payments, remittances, and payments for goods and services on platforms like Binance, where 7% of all traffic originates from Russia.
The report also highlighted the risks associated with holding crypto in Russia, particularly amid growing geopolitical tensions. The bank warned that potential sanctions from Western countries could block access to funds held in stablecoins like USDT and USDC.
