Russia's Crypto Surge Sparks Kremlin Concern
The Russian Central Bank has flagged a significant increase in cryptocurrency-related activity among Russian citizens. According to its latest financial stability report, there was a sharp rise in transactions on crypto exchanges and peer-to-peer platforms from Q4 2023 to Q1 2024. The bank's data shows that web traffic on major crypto sites increased by 16.4%, with Russians making 104.6 million visits to these platforms. Notably, unique IP addresses rose by 15.1% during this period.
The Kremlin is reportedly growing concerned about the trend, which it sees as a challenge to its control over citizens' finances. The bank's report highlighted the risks of holding crypto in Russia, particularly amid growing geopolitical tensions and the possibility of Western sanctions blocking access to funds held in stablecoins like USDT and USDC.
Despite these concerns, Russians appear to be gravitating towards higher-cap cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, as well as USD-pegged stablecoins. The bank has warned domestic financial institutions against engaging with crypto-related financial instruments and services, citing the potential risks of sanctions and regulatory uncertainty.
