Russia's Digital Ruble and South Korea's CBDC Pilot: Major Milestones in September 2026
Crypto researcher SMQKE has highlighted several major deadlines and milestones set to occur in September 2026. One of the most consequential dates is September 1, when Russia's central bank digital currency goes live, with all 12 systemically important banks and large retailers required to begin accepting digital ruble payments.
The same day, Russia's comprehensive cryptocurrency law takes effect, recognizing digital currency as property and creating a licensed exchange market supervised by the central bank. A recent survey found that 46% of Russians are ready to adopt the digital ruble immediately.
In addition to these developments in Russia, South Korea's Bank of Korea is launching Phase 2 of Project Hangang, expanding its CBDC pilot with two regional lenders and introducing government subsidy distribution through tokenized bank deposits. Up to 500,000 users will participate across nine banks.
