Russia's Digital Ruble Launches on September 1st Amid Cryptocurrency Ban
Russia is set to launch its digital ruble on September 1st, marking a significant step in promoting state-backed currency over cryptocurrencies. Telecom firms and e-commerce businesses will be among the first to accept digital rubles, with major operators MTS, Rostelecom, and MegaFon confirming their participation.
The rollout is part of Russia's strategy to prevent the adoption of cryptocurrencies for direct payments, despite allowing investment and transactions involving them. The Central Bank has set a deadline for retailers to adopt digital rubles by 2026, with smaller companies given until 2028 to comply.
Individuals will be able to access wallets through existing banking apps, with no fees charged. However, the Central Bank plans to cap monthly top-ups at 300,000 rubles per bank. Russians still cannot spend Bitcoin or other decentralized tokens directly, as Moscow maintains its ban on using cryptocurrencies for domestic settlements.
